Notes from the Road - 1989 Chevrolet Corvette - #37
By Mark Joppru / John McElhinny

05/03/03 - Saturday
Watkins Glen

Well, day one of racing is over and we are on our way to Summit Racing to pick up our checkpoint sticker. It was quite an eventful day.

John and I got to the track at about 7:30am and had time to walk the track before the event started. Watkins Glen is a beautiful 3 mile racetrack set in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. It has many elevation changes which make for a challenging track experience.

John drove the first session and rolled off in our #37 run spot. His first two laps were 15th quick overall and 2nd in our class, but on his last lap he spun in the chicane on turn 7. Fortunately he went off the track in a gravel trap and did not damage the car or more importantly himself. The car got stuck though and needed to be towed out. We were given a DNF (Did Not Finish) for the session.

Corcoran in the Firebird was No1 in our group, a full 10 sec ahead of place #2 of Greg Hagopian with Breneman's Firebird in the #3 spot in SSGT2. We met some new friends over lunch. Chris Boncimino and Philip Peszat from the Chicago area are running a Firebird in our division. It is their first time in One Lap and they are doing a great job. John grabbed the wheel again after lunch to defend our honor. He had a hot first lap, but was held up significantly by a Mallet Corvette and ended up finishing 32nd. He should have let us by him, but that's racer's luck. A disappointment, but we'll get after it again tomorrow.

Corcoran's Firebird lost his clutch in the second event and Breneman made a nice run. That vaulted him to first in our class with Hagopian and his Probe in second. We feel confident we can get back to the top of the class with some consistent runs over the next few days.

Brian Smith in his Viper is first overall after the day's events. He looks unstoppable. Boos and Adee continue to chase him in their Corvette ZO6s.

We left Watkins Glen at about 4pm. We made a brief stop at Summit Racing in Akron, Ohio for a checkpoint sticker and box lunches. Thanks to the folks at Summit Racing. They have a beautiful race shop/store and over a hundred people showed up there to greet us. John bought a pair of racing shoes. They will help him drive faster. ;-)

We got into Indianapolis at about 2am. Oops, I almost forgot that Indiana ignores Daylight savings time. Good news for us, we get an extra hour of sleep.
Keeping it shiny side up,
Mark and John
